Bruins Hold No. 2-ranked 'Cats To Lowest Score Of The Season

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. --- Although it wasn't the end result George Fox was looking for on Saturday, the Bruins can walk away with a smile, as they held the No. 2-ranked Linfield Wildcats to 24 points --- their lowest of the season.

Recap:
It was a wet and cold game on Saturday, but that didn't stop the nearly 3,500 fans from piling in to Stoffer Family Stadium to watch these two cross-county rivals square off on the battlefield. Linfield was the first to draw blood, as the Wildcats used their first possession to go for 10 plays and 75 yards, ending with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Bruins were able to respond, though, marching down the field on their first possession, but an interception in the red zone kept the Bruins out of the end zone. The Bruins held the Wildcats to just one score in the second quarter after quarterback Sam Riddle found Zach Kuzens for a 35-yard touchdown pass.

The Wildcats went into the half up, 21-0.

The third quarter was some of the best defense the Bruins have displayed this year. George Fox held the Wildcats scoreless for the entire third quarter, which was a first for the number two ranked team this season. Linfield was able to get on the board in the fourth with a 47-yard field goal by Michael Metter. With the final seconds running down on the game clock, the Wildcats had a chance to score after marching downfield to the one yard line. After two fantastic goal-line stops by the Bruins, Dane Jensen stepped up and forced a fumble to give the Bruins the ball.

The Bruins held the Wildcats to a scoring margin of 3-0 in the second half.

Top Performers:
John Shaffer, who leads the NWC in rushing yards per game (93.4), continued his efforts against the Wildcats producing 108 rushing yards on 16 carries. He became the first running-back this season to rush for more than 100 yards against the Wildcats. Grant Schroeder went 7-21 with two interceptions and 53 yards. Adrian Bonner led the defensive side of the ball recording 8 total tackles.

What It Means:
The Bruins still have some time to make up ground in the NWC standings with two games left in the season. As things stand right now, if the Bruins win their next two games they will be right in the middle of the pack.

What Comes Next:
The Bruins (3-5, 1-4 NWC) will travel to Forest Grove, Oregon to take on Pacific (Ore.) next Saturday on Nov. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
