Torregano's Shooting, Benner's Double-Double Lead Bruins Over Bethel

Box Score

By: Ryan Lackey

LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Justine Benner recorded her second double-double in as many games, and Anjenae Torregano was lights-out from deep, going 4-5 on threes, as the Bruins cruised past Bethel, 84-71, in the D3hoops.com Classic. The victory extends the Bruins' unbeaten run to 11-0 this season.

Recap:
In a typical manner, the Bruins raced out to an early lead as they dominated the first quarter of play. Bethel took a two-point lead after one minute of game time and never led again; by the end of the first quarter, the Bruins enjoyed a 21-12 cushion. From there, Bethel improved and kept pace: the Bruins outscored Bethel by a single point in the second and third quarters, and just two in the fourth.

However, the early deficit was too large for Bethel to overcome, especially against the aggressive Bruins, as they snatched fifteen steals. Remarkably, given the Bruins' scoring dominance in the first quarter, they actually improved as the game wore on, shooting nearly 50% from the field and just under 55% from beyond the arc in the second half. Bethel managed just a single three all game, unable to find a rhythm against the Bruins' perimeter defense.

The Bruins stretched their lead to 18, their largest of the night, with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter before coasting down to an 84-71 victory.

Top Performers:
Always well-balanced, the Bruins had four players in double-figures, and a fifth, Kaitlin Jamieson, just behind with nine points. Justine Benner led the Bruins with another double-double, her third this season, tallying 22 points on 6-13 shooting and collecting 10 rebounds. Benner added three steals and two blocks, and dished five assists.

Anjenae Torregano resumed her position as the Bruins' long-range threat, shooting 4-5 from three and 6-8 overall, putting up 18 points. Torregano also matched Benner with three steals, and she notched four assists. Sammy Naluai was third with 14 points and runner-up with six rebounds. Haylee Hutzler had 10 points on 4-8 shooting.

What It Means:
The Bruins march on, adding to their unblemished 11-0 record. They remain first in the Northwest Conference and retain their second-overall ranking nationally, behind Thomas More.

What Comes Next:
Returning to NWC competition, the Bruins travel to Lewis & Clark on Jan. 8.
