NEWBERG, Ore. --- The No. 2-ranked Bruins put on a show Friday night, as the top-ranked team hosted Whitman College in a Northwest Conference showdown for the top spot in the standings. The Bruins came away with the win in a 66-50 showing.
Recap:
The Missionaries were the first to draw blood, taking a 10-6 lead at the 5:01 mark in the first quarter, but that would be the only lead the Bruins would allow for the remainder of the game. George Fox closed the first quarter on five straight points from Justine Benner to take a 14-11 edge. With newfound momentum, the Bruins poured it on in the second quarter, out-scoring the Missionaries, 13-4, to take a 12 point lead after four minutes of play.
The Bruins finished the half with a comfortable 13 point lead over the Missionaries, 38-25.
The double-digit lead continued into the second half as the Bruins worked together as a team and smothered the Missionaries on the defensive end. The lead did drop to eight at the 6:16 mark in the fourth quarter, but another big run by the Bruins sealed the deal. In fact, Nicole Blizzard delivered the dagger at the 1:13 mark after hitting the triple to put the Bruins up by 16, 66-50.
Top Performers:
Kimberly Frost was a huge spark for the Bruins, scoring a new career-high 17 points and adding a career-high six steals. She also recorded five rebounds and two assists. Benner was right behind with 16 points and six rebounds. The Bruins forced the Missionaries into 21 turnovers and held Whitman to an 8.3 shooting clip from the 3-point line (1-12).
