Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. --- The No. 2-ranked George Fox women's basketball team hosted the Bearcats of Willamette University, Tuesday night, as the Bruins bested the Bearcats on senior night, 78-46.
Recap:
Before the game got underway, the Bruins honored their three seniors: Nicole Blizzard, Sammy Naluai and Justine Benner for their final season at George Fox.
The Bruins got off to a slow start in the opening minutes of the first quarter, as play appeared to be sluggish and both teams couldn't get into a groove. Turnovers seemed to come in pairs from both sides, but the Bruins were able to find their groove from their press, going on an 11-0 run from 2:35 to the final seconds of the quarter, 14-10.
The press continued to be a factor well into the second quarter, as the Bearcats didn't have an answer for the well-organized Bruins. The Bruins lead grew to double digits at the 5:06 mark when Tavin Headings knocked down the deep triple, 28-17. The Bearcat went on a run of their own bringing the game within seven, 28-21, but Headings was at it again, hitting another three to push the lead up to 10, 31-21.
George Fox went into the half up by 13, 39-26. The Bruins forced 15 turnovers in the first half and recorded 11 steals, with Kimberly Frost leading the way with four steals.
Despite the best efforts by the Bearcats, the Bruins maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. At the 4:01 mark, Benner made a nice move in the paint to give the Bruins an 11 point advantage, 39-37. That lead increased to 18 moments later after Headings hit her third three of the game, 57-39.
Naluai kicked off the fourth quarter with an easy layup in the paint to give the Bruins their largest lead up to that point, 61-42. The Bruins kept the Bearcats at an arm's length for the remainder of the game.
