Bruins Fall To Blues in Top-Ranked Showdown

NEWBERG, Ore. --- It was a top-ranked showdown Sunday afternoon, as the No. 21-ranked George Fox women's basketball team hosted the No. 18-ranked Blues of Whitman College in a competitive 82-74 loss.

Recap:
Whitman set the tone in the opening quarter, going on a 10-0 run in the first two minutes. After trailing, 12-2, the Bruins rallied back going on a 12-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 14-12, with 2:08 left in the quarter. The Bruins continued their run to finish the quarter with a 10 point lead, 23-13. Freshman Kylin Collman was the main reason behind the 21-1 run, hitting three consecutive threes in the final minute of the first.

The Blues chipped away at the Bruins' lead in the second quarter, recording the second tie of the game with 3:54 left, 29-29. The Bruins responded on the next two possessions, as Tavin Headings drilled back-to-back 3-point shots.

The Bruins went into the half with a seven point advantage, 42-35.

George Fox lost some steam after the break, as the Blues went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two, 47-45. Haley Strowbridge pushed the lead back up to five for the Bruins after a huge three in the corner, but Whitman continued to chip away. The Blues relentlessness paid off in the final seconds of the third, as the away team went into the fourth with a one point lead, 58-57.

The fourth quarter was full of excitement and tension, as both teams locked up on the defensive side of the ball. In fact, both teams combined for seven turnovers in the final quarter of play.

Whitman opened up the scoring with seven straight points to go up by seven, 69-62. Collman hit her fifth three of the game at the 3:57 mark to put the Bruins down by four, 72-68. Kimberly Frost drew a foul a minute later, and knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the game within two, 74-72. With :52 seconds showing on the scoreboard, Whitman's Chelsi Brewer helped seal the deal with a three to give the Blues a five point edge, 77-72. The Bruins finished the game on the free throw line.

Top Performers:
Collman finished with a new career-high, going 5-11 from the field and 5-10 from the three point line for 16 points. Headings ended her night with 12 points, while both Frost and Hailey Hartney tallied 10 apiece. Frost tied her career-high in assists with 11 in her 39 minutes of play. The 10 points and 11 assists for Frost marked her first double-double of the season.

What It Means:
The Bruins fall to 14-3 on the season and 6-2 in the Northwest Conference.

What Comes Next:
The Bruins are back in action Friday, Jan. 27, at 6p.m. against the No. 14-ranked Loggers of Puget Sound.
