MCMINNVILLE, Ore. --- Â After an unexpectedly tough day on the Michelbook Country Club course, George Fox pushed through to finish their weekend in second place. Three Bruins finished in the top 15 on the leaderboard, capping off a successful weekend for the Bruins.
How It Happened
After a solid day out on the course Saturday, the Bruins finished the final day with a combined score of 310, landing them in second place at +22 with two top 10 individual finishes. There were a few struggles, but others rose to the challenge to carry the team. Willamette won the seven-team tournament, shooting a +5 for the weekend to win by 31 strokes over George Fox.
Top Performances
Riding the momentum of his opening round performance Saturday,
Mason Rohleder led the Bruins with a two-over 74, landing fifth on the leaderboard.
Dante Heitschmidt followed up Saturday's strong round with an eight-over 80, finishing in an eighth place tie. After shooting six-over Saturday,
Brenden Borck shaved two strokes with a 76, placing him in a tie for 10th overall.Â
Brett Hassoun knocked three strokes off his first-round score, shooting eight-over 80, placing him in the top 25. Â
Coach's Thoughts
"There were some really encouraging things and some areas to work on," said head coach
Branden Thompson. "I like how the team is progressing, especially how the young guys are getting comfortable. Mason played great after struggling on his first 9 holes of the tournament. He was 2 under after that, which is impressive." Â
What It Means
The Bruins gained eight strokes from their Saturday score, but were still able to maintain a second-place finish, 11 strokes ahead of third-place Linfield, the tournament host.
What's Next
The Bruins host their own George Fox Fall Invitational at Astoria Golf & Country Club, beginning Saturday, Oct. 2 and concluding Sunday, Oct. 3.
