3/24/2026 1:26:00 PM

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Northwest Conference office announced its Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 17 through March 23, with Caleb Smith and Makaylah Johnson being awarded the weekly honor.

Smith won the NWC men's field award after putting together one of the best athletic performances in George Fox track and field history, breaking the 31-year-old program decathlon record set by his head coach, John Smith. Against 13 athletes, the senior won five events: the long jump, high jump, discus, pole vault, and javelin. When all was said and done, the former walk-on had scored 7,170, breaking the program mark and putting himself in the top 50 nationally in all events. In the decathlon total, Smith's record of 7,170 is number one in the nation by a wide margin, 250 points better than his nearest national competition.

Earning the women's field weekly honor, Johnson had a standout showing at the Redlands Invite, capturing the heptathlon in style. The freshman finished in the top two in six of the seven events, winning the 100m hurdles, long jump, and 800m. Thanks to her strong efforts, Johnson now leads the entire nation in the heptathlon with her score of 4,638.

Smith, Johnson, and the track and field programs will travel to Westmont, Calif., to compete in the Westmont Classic. The meet is set to take place on Thursday, March 26.
