Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Arianna Mohsenian scored
21 points and Hannah Munger posted her seventh straight
double-double as the George Fox University Bruins inaugurated the
Michael Meek coaching era with an 87-61 win over
the Corban University Warriors in women's basketball action
Tuesday night here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller
Gym.
Mohsenian led all scorers by hitting 7-12 from the field,
including 5-9 from three-point range, while Munger contributed 20
points on 8-11 field goals and 4-5 from the line with 13
rebounds. She had recorded double figures in points and
rebounds in each of the Bruins' final six games of 2009-10,
all post-season action (two in the Northwest Conference Tournament,
four in the NCAA Division III National Tournament).
Keisha Gordon and Megan Arnoldy added 13 points each, helping
Meek to win in his first game as a college coach. The
Bruins' new mentor came from Southridge High School in
Beaverton, Ore., where he had won five large-school state
championships in the last six years, to replace 14-year veteran
Scott Rueck, who took the women's basketball job at Oregon
State University.
George Fox jumped out to a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game
behind a basket and two free throws by Arnoldy and a three by
Mohsenian before Corban got going. Led by Jennesa Miller, who
scored 10 points in the first half, the Warriors went on a 10-0 run
to take the lead and built up a nine-point advantage at 23-14 on a
layup by Christy Mosier midway through the first half.
Munger started the Bruins' comeback with five unanswered
points, and an 11-1 run featuring an offensive putback and a
three-pointer by Gordon lifted the home team from a 27-19 deficit
to a 30-28 lead with 4:48 left. The Bruins closed the half
with a 9-2 run to lead 39-30 at the break.
A trey by Mohsenian boosted the Bruin lead to 49-38 with 16:37
left in the game, but the Warriors made one final run behind Katie
Steigleman, their All-Cascade Collegiate Conference forward who had
joined the school's 1,000-point club in their season
opener. Scoring nine straight points, the first seven by
Steigleman, Corban got within two at 49-47 with 11:15 showing
before the wheels fell off for the visitors.
Over the next two-and-a-half minutes, the Bruins exploded for a
15-2 outburst, with Arnoldy and Mohsenian scoring five points
apiece, to build a 64-49 margin, and the Warriors got no closer
than 12 the rest of the way. Katie Morse's three with
two ticks left gave the Bruins their largest lead and final
score.
The Bruins connected on 32-57 from the field (.561), including
19-29 (.655) in the second half. George Fox held a 51-28
advantage in rebounds, Gordon just missing a double-double of her
own with nine boards, but committed 31 turnovers to 21 for
Corban. Carly Towne and Hayley Cusick had six and five
assists each, Munger blocked three shots, and Mohsenian made four
steals.
Steigleman led the Warriors with 18 points, while Miller added
11 and Tess Bennett 10. Corban shot .362 (21-58) from the
field, and only .333 (11-33) in the second half. Bennett
grabbed a team-high six rebounds, Ashlee Roderick handed out four
assists, and Steigleman made four steals.
