For 15 years (1999-2014), Blair Cash roamed the sidelines, courts and ball fields as George Fox’s sports information director – the “best job I ever had,” he says. His passion for the university was evident, as he turned down Division I opportunities because of his love for students, the Pacific Northwest, and Bruin Athletics. He covered two NCAA Division III national champions at George Fox – the baseball team’s World Series title run in 2004 and the women’s basketball squad’s perfect 32-0 campaign in 2009 – and he went beyond the call of duty by teaching theology courses at the university for five years. For his exemplary work as an SID, Cash twice received the Jack Sereault Award as the Northwest Conference SID of the Year (2009 and 2014).
A 1976 graduate of Belhaven University, Cash was named his alma mater’s first full-time SID upon graduating. He went on to serve in the same capacity at the University of Montevallo (1977-82) and logged one more year as an SID – at the University of South Alabama (1982-83) – before leaving the profession to attend Reformed Theological Seminary and become an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church. He went on to serve as a full-time pastor for nine years.
Even while in ministry, Cash stayed involved in athletics as a stringer in Natchez, Mississippi, where he covered Alcorn State University (and future NFL quarterback Steve McNair), but his desire to return to full-time work in the arena compelled him to return to full-time sports information work in 1998. He worked for three months as an assistant at Texas State University-San Marcos and six months as the head SID at Samford University before taking the George Fox opening.
Cash’s love for athletics led him to serve as the Northwest Conference Assistant Commissioner for three years before heading to Multnomah University for one year (2017-18) as an SID before he retired. He enjoys his role as scorer for the Hillsboro Hops baseball team, and is always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. In addition to his George Fox Hall of Famer honor, Cash is in Belhaven University’s Hall of Fame as the school’s inaugural SID.
