He established the school record of 7,138 points in the decathlon in 1995 at the NAIA National Championships, earning All-American honors with a fifth-place finish -  the same place he earned the year before when he also was an All American. In the university's all-time record books, he stands second in the  pole vault (15  feet, 7  inches), sixth in the high jump (6-6.75), seventh in the triple jump (45-11.25), eighth in the javelin (182-5), and 10th in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.33), discus (144-6), and long jump (22-4.5). He continued to compete after graduation, earning a U.S. national ranking in the top 50  in the decathlon, winning the University of Oregon Invitational, and placing second at the Rocky Mountain Invitational. After eight years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Smith became head coach of the Bruin track and field and cross country programs in 2006.
