Against incredible odds, the 1972-73 George Fox men's basketball team became the first Bruin team to compete in any NAIA National Tournament. After starting the season 5-11, the Bruins rebounded to win nine of the last 12 regular-season games to earn a playoff spot. Victories over No. I-seeded Linfield 95-88 and Pacific  68-67 gave the Bruins the District 2 championship,  making George Fox the first independent college to represent the district in 15 years. A first-round loss in  the NAIA National Tournament left the team with a final 16-15 record. Sammy Ibarra made the NAIA All-District 2 Second Team, while Craig Taylor and Rob Wunder were NAIA All-District 2 Honorable Mention.
