The 2009 George Fox baseball team will go down as one of the most successful squads in program history. Coached by Marty Hunter, the Bruins posted a 36-11 record overall, claimed a share of the Northwest Conference title with a 27-5 league mark, and finished second in the West Regional Tournament, just missing a trip to the NCAA Division III College World Series.
George Fox finished strong, winning a NWC playoff game 24-6 over No. 20 Pacific Lutheran to earn an automatic NCAA berth. Once there, the Bruins came back through the loser’s bracket to force a second championship game in the NCAA West Regional, where they fell 7-4 to Chapman University.
For their accomplishments, the Bruins ended up ranked 12th in the nation at season’s end (D3baseball.com). Collectively, George Fox set a school record for most regular-season wins (33) and finished No. 2 all-time in overall wins (36). The team landed 14 players on the All-NWC team, and coach Hunter was named NWC Co-Coach of the Year.
Individually, Matt Wyckoff, Bo Thunell and Chad Jones earned All-American and All-Region awards, and Wyckoff was selected the NWC Player of the Year. Together, they continued a winning tradition, propelling the Bruins to their 14th straight season with a winning record, their fifth straight NCAA appearance, and their eighth NCAA berth in 10 years.
