A member of the NAIA District II Champion cross country team his sophomore year and the 1980 NAIA District II Track and Field Champion in the 1500, Stephen Stuart displayed an “unusual range of ability” in track and field, racing in a variety of events ranging from the 400 meter to the 5k. Stuart finished ninth at the NAIA National Championships his senior season, clocking a time that is still fifth in program history after 45 years. One of Fox’s all-time best middle distance–distance runners, he was also an important member of the Cross Country teams he was on, helping the team represent District II at the NAIA National Championships. According to head coach Rich Allen, his definition of a good team member: “Helping your teammate become better than you,” epitomized his feelings and actions while at GFU.
